European Council Publishes Brexit Extension Decision
03/22/2019The European Council has published its decision to extend the deadline for the U.K.’s withdrawal from the EU until May 22, 2019, provided that the Withdrawal Agreement passes through the House of Commons by March 29, 2019. The extension is shorter than the U.K.’s requested deadline of June 30, 2019. If the Withdrawal Agreement is not approved, the deadline will be shortened to April 12, 2019, prior to which the U.K. must have indicated a way forward for the European Council to consider. As the European Parliament elections are due to be held at the end of May 2019, the U.K. will be obliged to hold elections for the European Parliament and must give notice of the poll by April 12, 2019 in order to do so.
The European Commission has also published a notice stating that the equivalence decisions made in December 2018 in respect of the U.K.’s CCP and CSD regimes will be amended to take account of the change of the withdrawal date.
